LOUISE CALNER TALKS MODELING
"It took time for me to see this as a real job"

You started modeling very young?
That’s correct! I started my career as a model when I was about ten years old, as a child model with Sweden Models. I remember a job I did for a Danish furniture company in Mölle. My mom had to be there to translate all the Danish for me because it was very difficult for a ten-year-old to understand how to sit and what to do in Danish (laughs) After that, I was scouted by the woman who started Mikas in Malmö and worked there for about six-seven years. So it was an early start for me, but it was incredibly fun and, above all, very developmental along the way. Of course I was very insecure at that young age and I almost always needed my mom to be there with me. It took time for me to see this as a real job!
What do you think it was about modeling that attracted you to it?
I have always loved being in the spotlight. The camera has always been my “best friend”. So to speak. When I was younger, I dreamed of becoming an actress, and where my family lived, my friends and I would always put on shows and performances on the street, so standing in front of an audience and performing has always appealed to me. I have always been very interested in fashion. So when I was asked to work as a model, it was an obvious choice.
Did you always feel as comfortable in front of the camera, did it come naturally to you?
The comfort didn’t always come naturally. In the beginning there were, of course, many new and exciting impressions within the fashion world. Just like any job, the first days at a new workplace are always a bit nerve-wracking and it always takes some time to feel comfortable in the role. It also depends a lot on who you work with, if the photographer is comfortable in their role, I automatically become comfortable in mine. I love working with photographers who let me work in a way that makes me feel at ease.
Many models are unexpectedly shy?
At the start of my career, I would definitely describe myself as the shy model. But the more experience I gained and the more I developed as a model and person, the more “playful” and outgoing I became. I love working with people and would absolutely describe myself as a happy and social person who loves to have fun at work. If you are not having fun it is hard to do a good job.
When was it you joined MIKAS. They’re one of the more prestigious agencies in Sweden. How did it feel to be picked up by them?
Sweden Models was the agency I started with, as I mentioned briefly earlier. After that came MIKAS and as you mentioned, it’s definitely one of Sweden’s most prestigious agencies with an excellent reputation. I’m very glad to have been with MIKAS and had that experience. That’s where I learned everything, and the agents who work there are very serious and genuinely supportive. I started with a lot of test shoots to get going and learn how to work in front of the camera. There’s a lot to think about and learn. After that, I did quite a few paid jobs and some fashion shows, especially in the Skåne area. Being picked up by MIKAS was, of course, a great honor. I had heard so many good things about them, but at the time they were only in Stockholm. It’s important to find an agency that cares not only about you as a model but also about you as a person. I clearly remember that my agent was very upfront with me, if I lost weight or didn’t manage school, I wouldn’t get jobs. I think that is a very professional approach and made me, as a fifteen-year-old girl, feel very safe, which is incredibly important. Since this can unfortunately be a very tough industry for many young people.
Do you think starting as a model at that young age gave you a different perspective about what you want to convey to other girls who are in that age group now?
Yes, experience is definitely valuable. It’s important to keep both feet on the ground. Always work with serious, reputable agencies. If you’re very young, always have a parent with you. It’s important to maintain a natural relationship with food and exercise. Don’t become too fixated on weight. It should be fun and healthy to work as a model.
Now you’re with Avenue Models, how long have you been with them?
Yes, exactly! I joined them this year, actually, in August. I applied and got a very positive response. I went up to Gothenburg to visit them and got accepted. So it all happened very quickly, but I think it’s going to be very exciting to see what they have to offer me.
What do you consider most important for an agent or agency to provide when you work with them?
Safety and security above all. It's the most important point to consider when entering the modeling industry! Find an agency that is professional, reliable, stable, and genuinely cares about you. Of course, it should also provide work, experience, and opportunities for growth.
What inspires you to give your best?
When everything is serious and professional, as it should be. I think it’s obvious that you should always approach each and every job with the mindset of giving your best. No matter what the assignment is.
Do you prefer when there is a very clear idea of what you’re supposed to do, or do you like it when there’s more of a creative exchange?
I’m always open to trying new ideas and being creative. Of course, there should always be a clear concept behind each job, because modeling days can often be long, so you naturally want a clear purpose, but I am someone who loves brainstorming and coming up with exciting ideas together as a group, it’s fun when, as a model, you can contribute your thoughts and ideas rather than just being there to be in front of the camera.
We are now entering autumn. Anything you’re looking forward to wearing this fall?
Yes absolutely! Autumn is my favourite season when it comes to fashion, every season there are always such beautiful colors that I just adore and love, but chic autumn-dresses are always a favourite. As are stylish skirts. I love autumn and all the fashion that comes with it. My favourite colors are brown and beige, which are typical autumn colors.
How would you describe your own, personal style?
My style is very clean and classic. I love fashion and always try to keep my wardrobe updated. My favourite stores are probably Vero Moda and Vila where I shop a lot. Their pieces have good quality at a reasonable price.
What do you wear when you want to feel your best?
A beautiful brown, sleek dress!
How do you define beauty?
Beauty to me is a natural look that you feel comfortable with. And, of course, it is also about the inside, who you are as a person.
