MACY TALKS SWEAR DOWN
"I think the ten year old me would be proud"

Interviewed by Culture Coast Talks editor Daniel John. Interview transcripts might have been edited for length and clarity.
You were only ten when singing in a big arena for the first time. Still, what would that ten year old think of where you're at now?
I hope the ten year old me would be proud of how far I have come and what I have achieved so far. I think the ten year old me would be proud of how hard I have worked and that I have shown commitment and determination to do the thing I loved back then and still love today.
Did you just never look back again after that first run?
I don’t think I ever looked back. It was always in me to make music. I couldn’t have dreamed of doing anything else. It is my passion and I am so lucky to be able to work my dream job. It isn’t easy though, but I never thought it would be. It can be frustrating, but the positives always outweigh the negatives. I feel, even though I have done this since I was ten, my journey is still at the beginning and that there are so many more amazing things to come, through my music. My highlights from this year are being played on BBC Radio 1, Performing at the BAFTA Cymru Awards and performing in front of over 50,000 at The Principality Stadium, in Cardiff.
You've consistently been inconsistent, being hard to put a label on genre-wise. Safe to say though, 'Swear Down' is more on the upbeat good vibes-side?
I think with my music I do love to experiment with different sounds and styles, sometimes it isn’t intentional to create different sounds, it is more who I write with. Every writer and producer is different and I love how lots of creatives in one room can come up with different ideas and sounds. I never try to put all of my proverbial eggs in one basket, as this reigns in the creative process sometimes. I have a lot of songs written that I may never use, but others might, so it's always good to experiment. 'Swear Down' was a great track to write. I was introduced to the wonderful Ollie Marland by Lu Whiting and Jon Lewis, from Wild Management. Ollie has experience in working with some greats like Tina Turner and Cher, so hard acts to follow. The process was over Zoom, as Ollie is in the States, but it was really fun and I learned loads from the sessions. We were delighted with the final track and I hope to write again with Ollie very soon.
I've found this song is ideal to kick off my mornings with. What artist can turn your mornings around?
Thank you, appreciate you saying that. My go to artist right now is Sabrina Carpenter. I love her music and really worth a listen.
Is more music on the way?
Yes, more music is planned. I will be releasing singles, another EP and hopefully a Christmas EP as well this year.
When will we see you take the stage here in Scandinavia?
I am humbled to know that I have fans in Scandinavia. I would love to tour there. I am in discussions with Wild Management about tours and this one will definitely have to be on the radar in the future. I appreciate that my music is listened to across the world, and hope to one day tour the world to meet fans in every country that I play. I can’t wait to come to Scandinavia, it would be amazing. Thank you to everyone who listens to my music there.
What does it mean to you having so many people listening?
It is amazing that people listen to my music, there is nothing better than when someone at a festival or gig sings back something I have written. It makes it all worthwhile. The people who listen to my music or come to my gigs are the people that allow me to continue making new music. I appreciate each and everyone of you. There is so much more to come and I can’t wait to share the new music with you all soon.
