MARIAMA MBYE TALKS MODELING
"I hardly recognized myself in the mirror"

Interviewed by Culture Coast Talks editor Daniel John. Interview transcripts might have been edited for length and clarity.
When was the first time you modeled?
The first time I modeled was at Folkets Park in Malmö. I took part in a fashion show and showcased African dresses. That was my first runway assignment and I was very nervous! I actually don’t remember my first photoshoot. But in the early shoots, I wasn’t at all as comfortable in front of the camera as I am now. I’ve always had a strong interest in fashion and wanted to be a model since I was little. It’s always been my dream. I’ve often had my mom and siblings photograph me in what felt like my own personal photo shoots, with makeup and lots of different outfits. I previously had a blog where I posted these pictures. It has always been my big passion and is still something I enjoy just as much today!
What is your most recent modeling job?
My most recent modeling job was for a beauty brand. It was actually my first beauty photoshoot, which was a lot of fun. It was a full day with makeup, styling, photography, and even some filming. I really enjoy those full-day shoot, when it’s a full day, it’s the best.
How far has modeling taken you internationally?
Most of my modeling work is in Sweden but I’ve also done some in Copenhagen, which isn’t too far. The farthest from home has been Dubai, two years ago. I went there with my agency at the time. Unfortunately I didn’t quite get the experience I had hoped for, as much was different due to the pandemic. I was in Dubai in spring 2021, and there were a lot of restrictions. The thing I found most different was the makeup. We sat in makeup for two–three hours compared to Sweden, where it usually takes around thirty minutes. I hardly recognized myself in the mirror, it was very exciting! The makeup was glamorous, unlike Sweden where it’s usually more natural. One day we even got to showcase wedding dresses, which was a lot of fun! I’d love to go back and get another chance, and of course also work in other parts of the world.
Here in Sweden, spring is coming soon. What time of year do you feel most at home, especially fashion-wise?
I mostly prefer summer, both fashion-wise and the warmth, of course. When it comes to clothes, I think it’s easiest to put together a stylish outfit in spring and summer, so it’s definitely my favorite.
I would guess the outfit you wear most when you’re not modeling is equestrian apparel, riding clothes, since you also train and compete with horses. Has this love been with you as long as modeling?
Yes absolutely. I’ve had both my love for modeling and for horses since I was little. I’ve often been asked which I like more, modeling or horses, and if I could only choose one, which would it be. I love being able to do both, and it has always been a dream. I’m very happy and grateful to do what I love and to combine both. I do not have to choose, I can do what I love!
Is there a particular photographer, makeup artist, or creative project you’d dream of working with?
I have a lot of my own ideas for shoots I’d like to do. A big dream just came true when I did a beauty photoshoot. I really enjoy doing campaign shoots. I’ve done two big ones for, among others, the Mobilia and Triangeln shopping centers, where the images were everywhere across Malmö. Right now, I am one of the Swedish participants in the selection to represent Sweden in Miss Universe, which of course is one of my biggest dreams.
What about the horse riding, what’s the biggest dream there?
I have my own business where I train, compete, and sell horses. It is fairly new. The goal has always been to compete at the highest level. I really enjoy working with horses, training, and developing together. Competing is one of the most fun things, and you can’t find a better teammate than your horse! The goal is for my business to grow, to compete more, and I also plan to incorporate modeling into it a bit more!
Do you have any routines to stay healthy, physically and mentally, what kind of prep do you prefer to keep both mind and body in great shape?
I always start my day with yoga, meditation, or pilates. Good for both mental health and the body. Starting my day this way always makes me feel better. I ride my horses during the day and usually end with a workout at the gym or similar. I like to stay active and feel good from it. I’m vegetarian, both for the animals and the environment, but also for my own health. I also don’t drink alcohol, which feels completely natural to me. For many people it’s something you just do because others think you should. In many situations, not doing it can seem strange to others, but it does not affect me and I do not feel it’s necessary. I see no reason to.
Being with the horses in the stable is probably also a good space to have far removed from the modeling life?
Yes, exactly! I feel very good being with my horses. At the same time, I really enjoy the modeling life. The contrasts works very well together, and it does give my life a sense of balance!
