MLIE TALKS AT LEAST I'M SORRY

Interviewed by Culture Coast Talks editor Daniel John. Interview transcripts might have been edited for length and clarity.

What is 'At Least I’m Sorry' about?

The song 'At Least I’m Sorry' is about jealousy after the end of a relationship when the other person has moved on faster than you have, while you still hold onto the hope that it is not really over. I wanted to capture those sometimes extremely impulsive reactions and thoughts that you can have when you’re jealous and how, from the outside, they can sometimes look silly or even a little comical.

Even with just these two songs so far, you’ve already collaborated with some amazing songwriters. What does your writing process with others look like. Do you prefer writing alone first, or bouncing ideas back and forth with producers and collaborators throughout the process?

I absolutely love working with others, and my songs would never be the same without them. I do write on my own too, but the most unique ideas always seem to come when I’m collaborating, so I prefer sitting in a session with others and creating music together.

Do you mostly draw from your own experiences or do you also just write about what others can relate to?

I always write about things I can relate to and that are inspired by my own life. My thinking is, if I can not relate to it myself then why would anyone else. Most of my inspiration comes from the feelings that grow inside me when I hear the melodies we create. That usually happens really quickly and it’s hard to explain but I get a certain feeling and then I immediately know what the lyrics should be about.

MLIE as an artist project is still quite new, how long have you been singing and writing though, does it go a lot further back?

I’ve been singing and writing music for as long as I can remember, but before I didn’t really know what my music was or who I was as an artist. When we wrote 'Ruin My Life', though, everything just clicked. I could stand behind every single part of that song, and I loved it, after that I just kept going.

Which artists have influenced you the most?

I have so many influences and role models, but I’d still say the biggest ones are Nessa Barrett, Ariana Grande, Tate McRae, and Lozeak. But I’m constantly being inspired by new music and new artists.

It was only about six months ago you debuted with ‘Ruin My Life.’ With everything still so new, how does it feel to really put yourself out there, as an artist?

It honestly feels so great to be releasing music, of course, there was some uncertainty in me when it came to putting out that first song, but in the end the process was so much fun and I’m incredibly grateful for all the feedback I’ve gotten on my music!

You definitely don’t have anything to be sorry about with these songs. Are you writing on anything now?

I’m writing a lot of new songs right now, and I am really hoping that something new will be out soon.
